AERO Help and FAQ

Answers to common questions about AERO, the airport operations counting service at aero.motioninfo.com. Can’t find what you need? Email support@motioninfo.com or call 401-247-7780.

Getting started

AERO counts takeoffs and landings at your airport using ADS-B receivers on the field and gives you a dashboard, reports and live displays at https://aero.motioninfo.com. Sign in with the username and password we set up for your airport.

Signing in and resetting your password

I forgot my password.
Go to https://aero.motioninfo.com and click “Forgot password?” under the sign in box. Enter your username and click “Request Password Reset”. Check your email for the reset message, including your spam or junk folder.

I don’t know my username, or the reset email never arrived.
Email support@motioninfo.com or call 401-247-7780 with your name, airport and FAA identifier. We will look up your account.

Can I add someone else at my airport?
Yes. If you are the admin user for your airport, click the people icon (User Admin) in the top menu bar to open User Administration, where you can add a new user. Otherwise, email us the person’s name and email and we will set them up. Each person should have their own login.

I signed in but see no data, or the wrong airport.
Sign out, sign back in, and refresh the page. If it still looks wrong, email us your username and airport.

What the operations counts mean

What is an operation?
Each takeoff is one operation and each landing is one operation. A touch and go counts as two, the same way the FAA counts them.

How does AERO count them?
Receivers on the airfield pick up ADS-B signals from aircraft. AERO turns those position reports into arrivals and departures using your runway and airport layout. FAA traffic data fills in where available.

Why might my count be lower than I expected?
Aircraft without ADS-B Out (some older aircraft, gliders, some ag and antique aircraft) are not seen. That makes AERO counts a verified floor: actual activity is at least what we report. If counts drop sharply from one month to the next, tell us. It can mean a receiver needs attention.

Local vs itinerant, runway use and night ops?

  • Local is an estimate: the same aircraft departs and returns within 60 minutes. Reports label it as an estimate.
  • Runway use is shown only for operations where the runway could be identified, and reports show that rate.
  • Night is 10:00 pm to 6:59 am local time, the same window used for Part 150 noise work.

Can I use these numbers for grants, 5010 or master plans?
Yes, that is what they are built for. The full write up of how counts are made, with limitations, is at aero.motioninfo.com/methodology.cfm. Share it with your consultant or FAA reviewer.

Reports and the summary PDF

Where do I find my monthly numbers?
Sign in and open the Dashboard. It shows operations by day and month, fleet mix and runway use, and you can pick a date range.

How do I get the summary PDF?
On the Dashboard, choose your date range, then click the Print button in the summary panel. The summary PDF opens in a new tab, ready to save or print. To get the data as a spreadsheet, click Excel Export on the Dashboard.

Can I get custom reports or reports by email?
Custom Reports in the AERO menu offers additional report formats when they are part of your subscription. If you would like a report sent to you on a regular schedule, email support@motioninfo.com and we will help.

The Manager tab

Click “Manager” in the AERO menu. It is the airport manager console with grant packet counts built from the same data as the dashboard:

  • After hours operations, based on your airport’s operating hours (default 10:00 pm to 6:59 am, and you can set your own)
  • Touch and go and missed approach or go around counts
  • Overflights (aircraft that passed through without landing or taking off)
  • Arrivals and departures by runway
  • FAA 5010 buckets: air carrier, air taxi, GA local, GA itinerant and military
  • Based aircraft and overnight stay information

You can download the packet as a PDF and CSV files. These counts are for 5010, ALP and grant packets. They are not landing fee invoices.

Arrivals and departures board (FIDS) for a lobby TV or website

Is it included?
Yes, the live arrivals and departures board is included with AERO.

How do I set it up?

  1. Sign in and open “Embed Help” from the AERO menu. It shows the code already filled in for your airport.
  2. For a lobby or FBO TV, put this address into your digital signage system or a full screen browser on the TV: https://aero.motioninfo.com/fids.cfm?locationid=YOURID (replace YOURID with your airport identifier; Embed Help shows the exact link).
  3. For your website, paste the iframe code from Embed Help onto the page where you want the board.
  4. Click Preview on Embed Help to see it first.

What else can I put on my website?
Embed Help also has code for a flight schedule, a public airport activity dashboard (12 month trends, fleet mix and runway use, good for master plan public meetings) and a noise complaint form with a dark mode option.

The board is blank or frozen.
Refresh the browser on the TV. If it stays blank, email us the airport and the address the TV is using.

Other questions

Aircraft are not showing on the map or counts look wrong.
Check that power and internet to the receiver are on, then contact us. Please don’t move or open the equipment. We can check the station remotely.

How long is history kept?
Counts are kept indefinitely, so year over year trends use the same method. Replay of past days is available to subscribers.

Billing, renewals and invoices.
Email support@motioninfo.com or call 401-247-7780. For a new airport or a quote, use our AERO quote request form or email sales@motioninfo.com. Subscriptions start at $1,800 per year.
