North Atlantic right whales received some encouraging news this year: 23 calves were documented during the 2026 calving season, the highest number since 2009.
Each year, some North Atlantic right whales migrate more than 1,000 miles from feeding grounds in the Northeast to coastal waters off North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. NOAA Fisheries and its partners monitor these waters from mid-November through mid-April, identifying mothers and calves through aerial surveys, vessel surveys and public sightings.
The 2026 season produced more than just a strong calf count. Of the 23 mothers identified with calves, 20 had given birth previously. Thirteen of those returning mothers last had calves during the 2021 or 2022 seasons—an interval of approximately four to five years.
That is significant because healthy North Atlantic right whales have historically given birth about every three to four years. In recent years, the average interval has stretched to seven to 10 years. Scientists believe stresses including fishing-gear entanglements, vessel strikes and changes in prey availability have contributed to reduced reproductive rates.
The shorter intervals seen among many of this year’s mothers may be an encouraging sign.
NOAA recorded approximately 500 sightings of 129 individual right whales in southeastern waters during the season, representing more than a quarter of the estimated population excluding the new calves. The number of individual whales observed in the Southeast was also 29 percent higher than during the previous calving season. NOAA says the presence of such a large portion of the population, combined with the increased number of calves, suggests that reproductive health may be improving.
Encouraging, But Recovery Remains Fragile
The milestone is important because the North Atlantic right whale remains one of the world’s most endangered large whale species. NOAA estimates that approximately 380 individuals remain, including only about 70 reproductively active females. Since 2017, more than 20 percent of the population has been affected by the ongoing Unusual Mortality Event through death, serious injury or illness. Entanglement in fishing gear and vessel strikes remain the leading human-caused threats.
For that reason, scientists are describing the 2026 results with cautious optimism rather than declaring a recovery.
Still, 23 calves—and particularly the return toward shorter intervals between births—provide an important positive indicator for a species that has faced years of declining numbers and reproductive challenges.
As the mothers and calves return north toward feeding areas along the northeastern United States and Canada, monitoring and protection continue. Researchers are increasingly combining traditional aerial and vessel surveys with technologies including passive acoustic monitoring, drones, uncrewed surface vehicles and satellite observations to better understand where whales are located and reduce risks as they move through heavily traveled coastal waters.
For North Atlantic right whales, recovery will be measured over many years rather than a single season. But after nearly two decades, 23 new calves give conservationists something they have not had enough of: measurable progress.
